NAD: '68 Vibrolux custom + Roland JC-40
I just bought one..secondhand with flightcase..been waiting for one to turn up for ages and it's local too. This will double with a Roland JC...I'm thinking of retiring my JC-160 from road duties and getting a JC-40. I need to hear one first though.

Congrats! I have the Princeton, which I'm madly in love with. The Deluxe is also on my list.
Totally dig the way these look (and sound).

There's nothing better than finding the perfect used amp, locally, with a case. Well done! High fives all around.

Re: '68 Vibrolux custom
Nice!
I have an old one and it's quickly becoming my favourite amp. Huge surfy reverb, super choppy trem which if you queue up properly sounds like a really percussive delay. The amp itself is super gooey and compressed. Notes sag and bloom and just end up with really beautiful musicality. Took me a long time to appreciate the amp (I've had it about 6 years), but it's really earned it's keep.
Not sure if the new ones are anything like mine, but if so, you've got a great amp. Enjoy it!

yeh! I've been patiently waiting for one to come along...this was actually the first one I'd seen for sale second hand full stop, so even more lucky it's local..it was bought new a few months ago and used for one tour.SAVEStheDAY wrote:There's nothing better than finding the perfect used amp, locally, with a case. I almost bought an original 1979 silverface one.. but I don't know..I got into the idea of getting something new for a change.

Re: '68 Vibrolux custom
I just traded my way to the blackface RI, I've looked at them so many times, and discarded them because of the 2x10 setup, as I came from a world of 4x12 cabs, and 2x12 combos.
I bought a 65 Deluxe RI a while back, and sold it a couple of months ago, and imidiately regretted it, and have been on the lookout for another one. But I put some things up for sale locally, and a guy approached me about trading a small Supro amp, and a lapsteel for his Vibrolux RI, and I though what the heck, so I just picked it up today, but won't really have a chance to check it out until monday.

I think the blackface RI is quite different..I know they are to be found for a bargain price...theres been about 6 or 7 crop up for sale since I've been looking but then I think they came out 10 years ago now.

Re: '68 Vibrolux custom
Fender have released something really cool here..tons of character for a new amp. The reverb is extremely nice too..very sweet.
Yeh, this amp is good...really good.
My only concern is it might break up a touch early for my needs..but I won't be sure if that works or not for me until I crank it a bit more in rehearsal.

The stock speakers aren't the best, so upgrading to something a little more robust would probably help out with postponing the break up of the amp.

No need to make it into a pickup truck just because you need to buy an IKEA shelf, just get something a little more robust.
There's tons of speakers that will get you there and for not too much money. Best thing to do is just buy whatever works and don't think too much about it. Speaker searching is terrible. Lucky for you, and myself with my own old Vibrolux, the circuit is just a great circuit so just about any speaker will make the amp sound good just with various degrees of character and taste.

Re: '68 Vibrolux custom
Nice, Eggwheat. I have one of the similar '68 Custom Deluxe Reverbs. It is great fun having the reverb accessible on both amp channels. The "custom" channel is especially great with jazzmaster and jaguar pickups.
I am sure that you will give the stock speakers a fair chance, you might like them as is (obviously they were purpose chosen to break up a little earlier than the speakers in, say, a 65 DRRI, but you may find that you still need to turn the amp up pretty loud to get excessive amp break up happening).

Re: '68 Vibrolux custom + Roland JC-40
Yeh, I won't be changing anything till I've given it a really good run. Still really liking it so far. I prefer the reverb to the one in a vintage Super Reverb. And having the Reverb/Tremolo accessible on both channels is brilliant.
Anyway I just bought a new Roland JC-40 to pair with it...in the end I bought it blind as I couldn't find one to test out. I got a major discount on one new..couldn't find a secondhand one. It should be here tomorrow. I'm a little worried already though as I didn't realise it was only 2x 20watts, which isn't much for a transistor amp. I assumed it would be the same as all their other past 2x10 JC's which were 2x 40 watt. Never mind I will find out tomorrow when it arrives!
I'm interested to find out how the digital reverb and chorus sounds compared to the old ones. What also attracted me was that it has a stereo input, FX loop etc..so I could plug my Eventide straight into it in stereo if I choose to use it on it's own.
