Vega "Super 15" Amplifier Model No. S-15: Any info on this?

Post by Gonkulator » Tue Jan 22, 2013 10:52 am

So for the past two years I've owned the amp pictured below, a Vega Super 15. I can not find any info on it at all and the closest I've come is for the Super 10 amp. No idea how many watts, only that it has an old Jensen 15" speaker and will knock your socks off. I don't even know what year it's from.

Now the question is, does anyone know anything about these amps? I'd love to know what I've got.

I know the later 50's and early 60's Vega amps were built by Valco, the earlier ones from the 40's and 50's hawaiian lap steel craze were built by Vega and often were paired with a lap steel. Yours seems like a early to mid-50's model with the twin troides in the preamp. Does it have the OT on the chassis or is it a field coil speaker?

I'll have to get back to you on this when I can take a look.

Also I have no idea what an OT on the chassis or a field coil speaker is haha

looks rad! separate bass and treble controls!

the speaker code dates to late 1953, unless it's a replacement from '63. but the Jensen label seems to support '53, yes?

looks like maybe 2x6V6? Do tell, Gonk!!

So far everything points to this being a 50's amp, but I haven't had the time to dig her out of the closet and look over things closely. As far as everyone I know that's touched this amp everything is original except a few caps and possibly a few tubes.

I don't know if this is still an active post. It's old, but I'll give it a try.

This was my first bass amp. I bought it and a Howard bass guitar from my local music store in 1967 when I was 15.
I lent the amp and guitar to a friend and when I got them back, he had hacked the amp portion off so it could be used as a head. He also broke the neck of the guitar. Needless to say we never spoke again, lol.

I've been doing research also on both the guitar and amp but haven't found any definite info on either.

I have an old picture of the head part that I was using, but it's dark and partially obstructed. If you get this let me know I can try and copy the pic and send it to you.
