I need a new amp..
So, I have an original Fender Cyber Twin, and I really hate it, it has no tone to it at all, the clean sounds are alright at low volume levels, and the distorted tones are terrible sounding, and the amps tones arent dynamic at all, it's just plain terrible sounding. It also sounds bad with pedals.
I am looking for an affordable($350 - $700 US) tube amp that is good for mid size gigging and also good for home practice. And I want the amp to have a nice clean channel and I want it to be good with pedals.
Do you guys have any ideas?
Thanks.

I'm a fan of the Peavey Classic 50 2x12, you can pick up a used one for $400. They have a nice clean and a good overdrive sound, plus they seem to take pedals well. I also have liked the sounds of the Crate Vintage club 50 2x12, I heard a band use one once and they got a very Hum/Orange amp sound out of them.
Also, if your tastes go towards any shoe gazer or 80s new wave you could check out the Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus. Its solid state but has a good loud clean (some do find it too sterile) and does well with any time based effects or fuzz pedals.
All 3 can be found for under $500 or even $400. For a bit more you could also find an Ampeg V4, cleans are good, takes well to pedals and it has a very nice built in reverb. They were made in head and combo forms (I'd recomend a head and seprate cab, they are heavy). They are pretty old though, last made in the 70s so you might have to spend some money to have it serviced.

Musician's Friend has a blonde Fender Hot Rod Deluxe for $600. A cool amp for the money, IMHO.

+1 on the Hot Rod Deluxe. You can usually find them used for around $400. They are very reliable, in my experience. Otherwise, you may be able to find a used Silverface of some sort in the upper end of your price range.

minus 1 for the hot rod. we have four of those at our practice space. at all time at least one of them isn't working properly. unreliable.

i would also say stay away from the HR. The OD on them is great, but i just couldn't stand the clean sound. I play through a Super Reverb, so I may be bias towards 4x10s.

So one out of four isn't working and that makes them all unreliable? How well were these serviced?useme2305 wrote: minus 1 for the hot rod. we have four of those at our practice space. at all time at least one of them isn't working properly. unreliable.
I gigged for a year with mine, with absolutely zero issues. The other guitarist in my band, 3 years gigging with an HRDX. When I say gigging, I mean at the very least 3 full weekends a month in a smoky ass bar, usually 4-5 hours a night. If you want a newer tube amp at a decent cost, they are the way to go. Otherwise, save up for a Silverface!
Check the latest Guitar Player, they did an amp shootout. The HRD edged out the B-52 for the win. I can't find the article online, though.
Here's an interesting page on the HRD series:

They do break up too early, but you can swap preamp tubes for more headroom. David (Jazzblaster) started a thread about tube swapping in an HRD. I'll find the link later, for now I gotta GTFO...DouglasKuzmanoff wrote: i would also say stay away from the HR. The OD on them is great, but i just couldn't stand the clean sound. Re: I need a new amp..
You could also look out for a Peavey Classic 30, if 30 watt are enough. They're quite cheap, but also good amps.
I own one, but you should try one with your guitar first.

Re: I need a new amp..
I've played through a Classic 30(My friend owns one).
I really like the sound of it, but it's not powerful enough.
I was thinking on a Classic 50 212 or a 410.

Re: I need a new amp..
I always loved the Classic 50 410
But, as i don't need super-clean sounds, the 30 watt(s?) i get from this amp are far enough for me.
I really miss a standby-switch sometimes, though.

You don't think 30W is powerful enough?Shane110111 wrote: I've played through a Classic 30(My friend owns one).

What kind of venues are you playing? I found my 40W blues deluxe to be far too loud for anything below about 150-200 capacity, and when you're playing bigger venues you've always got better foldback

I want to go for the 50 cause it has alot more clean headroom, and I'm playing small/mid size venues.

Hot Rod is a very good choice.
Marshall's Valvestate Serie is also a good affordable alternative.Solidstate tech with a touch of tube and the Marshall feel.
70's Traynors are very under-rated and very much affordable.
Keep on havin' fun with amps!!!
