SF Champ Speaker Replacement

Post by batchainpuller » Mon May 14, 2007 1:56 pm

The speaker is blown in my '77 SF Champ and I'm not very knowledgeable about potential replacements. I guess I would like to preserve the sound of the original amp as much as possible however there is a myriad of options out there. Price is somewhat of an issue; I ain't rich but I wouldn't mind forking over some extra cash if it's worth it. I apologize for not getting into any further detail but I really am clueless. I'm sure you guys have some great preferences/ suggestions out there and any information at all would be a great help. I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in Mods/Projects/Restorations...
Thanks in advance.

I blew the speaker in my '74 champ ages ago, so I'm also eager to find out some info :)

I've read on forums that people stick Webers in there and apparently they are great improvements...

I don't have first-hand experience though.

Weber makes some fine vintage styled speakers

The Weber Signature Series AlNiCo 8" speaker is only $35 and the Ceramic is only $24. These are the cheaper ones and very reasonably priced. The Vintage Series are the expensive ones and can run up to $130.

any decent replacement speaker is going to be about $100 for a 12.

Champ's have 8" speakers. Although a custom cab with a 12" speaker would be killer...ala Musicmaster Bass amp.

+1 for Weber

Weber, Weber, Weber!  The Signature series is a great deal.  I've got an AlNiCo Sig 8 in my '79 Champ that is light-years beyond the stock Oxford (Oxfart).  The Oxford would fart out on anything played on the low E string.  The Weber sounds great all over.  It overdrives pretty well too, though I'm not a big fan of speaker distortion.

I've heard good and not-so-good things about the Jensen Mod speakers, which are another readily available replacement.  It seems like the overall consensus is that they're alright speakers, just don't expect them to sound like vintage Jensens.

another + here for Webers, they have great customer support, and reasonable prices. I replaced my P.A. speakers with Webers when they were clearing them out and it was a major upgrade. They will recone your 8" speaker for 40 bucks if you want, or the 8A100T is a direct replacement. I don't see how you could beat the price of their signature series speakers though.
Why should we buy postage stamps? We can make our own.

I've got a Weber Alnico that he made before the new model numbers in a 72 Vibro Champ and I could not be happier.

Thanks for your input everyone. I decided to go for a Jensen C8R as the Webers were not readily available at the shop and the amp sounds amazing. After I break it in a bit more I'm sure it'll sound even better..  :)

Yeah, it takes about 2 weeks to get a weber at the least. Glad you found a speaker  :D
