i own one of these and i guy i built a studio for has two of them.  they are totally sweet, a complete secret weapon and you can score them in the $250-$300 range.  they're totally common, because sears sold an assload of them.  and totally cheap because few people know how cool they are.  go get one, but don't tell anybody!  if you can find one close to original condition, they came as a cabinet that the head fits into the back of for transportation.  most of them you find like that need the speaks replaced and it's worth it to use the jensen reissue replacements.  but they are totally cool and cheaper just as a head.  just need to find an 8ohm cab to use it with.  good luck, that along with the supro valco chicago 51 is part of my secret recording arsenal.

Silvertone 1483.  Very similar to the 1484 but without reverb and tremolo.  Two channels with only volume bass treble controls much to a Bassman head from the same era.  They do tend to be a bit darker then most Fenders though.  If original, the 1483 should be mated to a 1x15 cab with a ceramic Jensen.  Not sure which model.  I'm a big fan of the 148x amp series BTW.  They're not too expensive and they sound good.  They can be a major PITA to repair due to some wacky wiring schemes.  Expect to pay in the $500-650 range for one with a cab.  You can sometimes see head only on ebay for $300-400. These amps have gone up a fair bit over the last couple of years.  I once got a VERY clean 1484 combo and two heads (one not working) at a guitar show for $350.  Those days are long gone.  I also have a 1482 and 1481.  Neither sound that great for guitar but they look cool as hell and seem to be popular with harp players.

Here are a couple similar ones on eBay right now. Not too cheap, but there are a few good photos to look at. I don't know much if anything about them though. But they sure do look cool  :?

1485 is a 4 6L6 model but otherwise is the same as a 1484.  The 1485 originally came mated to a 6x10 cab  :o  They're the most expensive on the vintage market these days.  Word of warning...  the old Jensens will blow very easily.  They used natural glues on the voice coils that gets really brittle over the years.  I have one blown one in one of my combos unfortunately.  The cabs area also really poorly made.  At least the baffle is anyway.  It's usually only 1/4" thick Masonite (aka press board).  They'll rattle like an '85 Caprice with 15"s in the trunk.  They're best mated to a different cab but if you buy a combo they came from the factory hardwired together.  You have to cut the speaker cord out and install a jack and stuff.

???

With one of the 4x6L6s models pushing it, I'd be surprised if the baffle didn't disintegrate entirely! I've heard about those 6x10 cabs before. I believe I read somewhere that the dude from the White Stripes liked to pair one of those up with a Twin or something. I wouldn't mind getting one of the lower wattage heads at some point.

Do the 1483 and 1484 run on two 6L6s?

1483 and 1484 are both two 6L6s.  The reverb on the 1484 and 1485 is to put it kindly, crap.  I mean, it sorta sounds like reverb if you turn it up just a little but anything more then halfway up and it's mainly just a wierd ringing sorta sound that will feedback like crazy if you kick any gain into it.  And that's when it's working well.  It's a great effect in and of itself if you can manage to tame it but is rather useless in any sort of live situation.

I not all that familiar with vintage Dano's but I saw a piggyback combo on eBay recently that used 7591 in the power section.  None of the Silvertones use that tube as far as I know but I would guess the circuits are pretty similar otherwise.
