Marshall JTM 60
Does anyone here own a marshall jtm 60 combo?
I got one for free a couple of months ago. the 2x12 version. its a cool amp. at first it was all neglected and crappy, but i fixed her up really nice.
i put some groove tubes el34s in there, and some jj 12ax7's. sounds amazing now. kinda voxy almost. not really a marshall crunch. alot less gain, but its perfect for me. loud as hell too. in stereo with my classic 50, HEAVEN.
plus, it was free.

Groove Tubes are still around? I haven't seen one in like 15 years.

Re: Marshall JTM 60
I seem to recall two main gripes about the JTM60 series. One was that they tended to overheat (the tubes are all in a little metal cage) and the second (probably related) was that the transformers were a bit on the weak side so they weren't very efficient. The first problem is usually dealt with by installing a cooling fan (like from a PC) - most techs can wire this up directly to the power source so you don't have to fiddle with an extra source for the fan. As for the transformers, there are lots of aftermarket transformer builders - maybe there's a "kit" designed for these amps that brings everything into balance. If you got it for free, it might be worth looking into these. But I'd certainly do some research on the first issue, as that's less subjective.

Re: Marshall JTM 60
yeah ive heard those problems. so far, ive had no issues, but i am going to invest in a fan for it sometime soon, and i may replace the transformers. however, someone noted that mine was a later model so it might not have the problems of the earlier ones.mjet260 wrote: I seem to recall two main gripes about the JTM60 series. The early vs later models might well be the issue you need to look at to see how much is internet chatter and how much is real. You can also scan the messages at the Marshall Amp Forum:

Here's one thread on that very issue with some fan installation options:

Re: Marshall JTM 60
An extension cab with a couple 15" speakers would probably go a long way toward fixing that. I have been using an early 70s Fender 2x15" cab for a little while now and it does fill out the low end a lot. They are usually pretty cheap too. Not the easiest thing to transport, but everything has a trade offmewithoutus wrote: i need more bass... :-\

Re: Marshall JTM 60
These cabs are rated at 4 ohms, so you might have to do some speaker swapping or rewiring to get what you need from it. Does the JTM60 have an impedence switch on the back panel? If not, do you know what load the stock speakers are?

the amp has two 8 ohm 12 inch g12 celestion heritage speakers, wired in 16 ohm. but when you unplug the internal speaker, you can use an 8n ohm load on the external speaker jack. its confusing. no impedance switch. just a 16 ohm internal speaker jack and a 16 ohm extension jack.

Re: Marshall JTM 60
Man did a single 15 amp work wonders for adding bass. It was an amp, but still it works great for adding more low end thump.
2x12 amps usually offer up some healthy low tones, too.
Anyway, just a thought.
