classic 50 noise problem!!

Post by mewithoutus » Thu Feb 01, 2007 12:31 am

my peavey classic 50 is maiing weird noises!!

when i start it up, the amp is on standby and i give it a few moments to warm up while i tune my guitar, mess with pedals whatever.

when i turn standby to the on position, there is brief static that kinda trails with the reverb. its odd.

anyway, when im turning the amp off, i put it in standby, put my guitar away and whatever thn turn it off, and when it turns off it makes a sound almost like i would be kicking an amp with the reverb 100% wet, making that reverb crash sound, but its like static and really loud, depending on what the amp volume is set at.

it has new tubes in it. new jj power tubes and new electro harmonix preamp tubes. what could this be???

The Classic 50 doesn't have tube reverb does it? I would still try pulling all the tubes and then re inserting them, make sure they are in there tight, and don't touch them with your hands, use a clean shirt or something that won't get oil on them. If that doesn't work, try turning the Reverb down to 0 and see if it still does it. Then try unplugging the reverb tank. If it goes away plug the reverb back in and, try wiggling the cords that go too and from the reverb tank and see if you can make it go away.
Why should we buy postage stamps? We can make our own.

the tubes are all new and i tried making sure they where in right and seated well. i turned the reverb off and at one point even unplugged it, but its like static. it sounds like its from the amp itself.

It sounds like at tube. Do you still have the old 12ax7 tubes that came with it? You might try putting those back in it and seeing if it goes away.
If it doesn't go away, stop using the amp and take it to be serviced. Crackling noises can lead to serious/expensive damage if left untreated.

Here is a article by Mike Soldano about trouble shooting a noisy tube amp.

The process of pulling tubes to find if it's a bad one is the same, regardless of when the sound is made, and it's the first step that any technician would do on it. And unless you can figure out if it's an easy fix, like a bad tube, I would take it to a repairman. I wouldn't leave it to chance with an amp that nice. It could wind up costing 50 dollars or it could blow and wind up costing hundreds of dollars, there's just no telling at this point. If you don't feel comfortable pulling tubes yourself, then take it in.

dont i feel goofy...

it was a tube. it turns out a sovtek preamp tube was the culprit. i stuck some groove tubes gold series 12ax7's in their and blammo, sounds great. no more hum, no more weird static.

thanks to everyone especially pullover who helped me out.

Word, thank you for posting your problem on here.  :)  Maybe someone else has been having similar problems with their amps and can benefit from your experience.

Hopefully you didn't throw the other tubes away.

nope, i keep old tubes for backup just in case. the tubes may be old, but if im at a gig or on tour and i dont have a pace to grab new tubes from quickly, im screwed. plus brand new tubes at a gig? i like to break my tubes in before i play em out...
