Running 2 amps at once.

Post by cpeck » Tue Jan 02, 2007 9:55 am

Hi,

I just ordered a Roger Mayer Crossroads A/B box off ye ole eBay, as I'm interested in running 2 amps in my setup.  I was wondering if people have had any luck with this, and if there are any suggestions you'd make?  I have a Vox AC30CC combo and a Marshall 6100LM/Marshall 412.  I don't know if I'll use the Vox for clean and Marshall for dirty, or run them both concurrently.  I guess I'm just looking for any suggestions/experience you all have had, and whether it's worth the hassle!

thanks!

I have played a friend's setup that was like that...he would run a blackface Super for his cleanish sounds, and a marshall plexi with a 4x12 for dirt.

both amps on at the same time, with a '71 goldtop les paul was a religious experience.

The day i played my old Carlsbro and Ampeg together, i rediscovered electric guitar.
Your split box is a nice active one, so just go and try it !
YOu can use the two amps to run a dry/wet setup with effects only on one side, You can take advantage of stereo pedals etc.
Two amps are great if you are the only guitarist in your band, or if you want want a huge room filling/spacy sound.
To me it's well worth the hassle.

Plus if one dies unexpectedly during a gig, you're still in the game.

i experimented with dual amps for a while. i used a SF twin for "normal mode", and then i added (both amps running at the same time) a cranked BF bassman through a marshall 4x12 cab for "loud mode". it sounded great, but for some reason my bandmates complained about not hearing themselves play... ???

This is something I've been wanting to do for ages now. I quite fancied running my Marshall Silver Series combo alongside something like a Twin or an AC30, or even a Bassman or Bandmaster. I like the look of those Framptone amp switchers on the Keeley website.

Wow, just imagine... two amps. That combination with my LP Custom or my Jaguar would be the most incredible thing ever ever ever... :? :? :?

Also, Nick Zinner uses two amps, and he's one of my favourite players.

I use a Super Reverb and a SF Twin together, I take my signal out of a stereo chorus pedal. One side to the Super the other side into a volume pedal so i can kill the signal to the Twin.  Crank em up and be prepared for some hearing loss.

On stage all I need is my Marshall DSL50 + 2x12", but for recording my band's last album I had a stereo setup - a JCM800 with a 4x12" plus a Fender Concert Reverb 4x10" combo, through my old Boss CE-1 Chorus Ensemble. We recorded with five mics in front of and around the amps, so I got a lot of different sounds just by choosing different amp mics. And with the stereo chorus on, it produced a warm and spacious sound... the wet signal went to the slightly crunched Marshall, and the direct signal to the clean combo.

Here you can listen to the recordings... click on song #9 "cold comfort" - this is my favourite stereo chorus sound!  :D

Hey .. those tracks are excellent! Really good stuff there ..

Is that mid-position Jazzmaster I'm hearing for most of it?

I used to run a plexi marshall and an ac 30 together, that was LOUD.
Lots of effects in front of each amp, so when you'd hit one pedal you'd
still get defintion from the other amp. Most of the time I just got confused ;D.
Later on I used  a DeluxeReverb and an Ampeg RocketBass amp together,
that was kinda fast'n'bulbous. The DeluxeReverb starts breaking up past 1.5,
and the RocketBass stays clean, the combination is  pure evil, especially with
a blue box or such.

Thanks! No Jazzmaster - it's mid-position Jaguar... my ocean turquoise AVRI was the only electric guitar during the recording sessions.

for a while i got lazy and was just carrying a combo amp to gigs, but i decided to get back in the game and i've been running a JCM 800 and a 5150 both into the 2 halves of a marshall cab set to stereo and it does kick ass.  in the studio, recording other people, i almost always record multiple amps when we are doing guitar overdubs.  i think it has to do with the fact that two different amps are gonna have not just two different tones in terms of frequency response, but also two different transient responses and two different distortion characters, and it just makes things start to fill out and really come alive and hit you in interesting ways.

now go do it....
