Re: Help! :D Weird Amp Noise Orange Combo
I've built a half dozen amps over the last few months (I may have a problem) and have followed this guide for the startup of each of them. It is detailed and step-by step. It also links to a procedure with a number of options for biasing. I used the 1ohm resistor to ground method for biasing in the past, but realized that what is a 1 ohm resistor is never exactly 1 ohm...so the current you think you're reading is generally much higher than you expect.

Re: Help! :D Weird Amp Noise Orange Combo
I found an amp tech in Tacoma who can look at it for not too much. I am going to give them a try so I don't make anything worse. LOL

It sounds like they only need to be slightly smarter than I am and since I'm not that smart it shouldn't be that hard. LOL

Honestly if I knew how to read schematics correctly I would be able to easily fix it. I know how to solder and all that stuff from putting together affect pedals and those have way more capacitors and resistors than this amp does.

Dropped it off in Tacoma to get the new tubes biased and to have things checked out to make sure it is all good. I will let you know what I find out. Could be a couple weeks.

Re: Help! :D Weird Amp Noise Orange Combo
Got it back from Tacoma Amplifier Service. He biased it with the new tubes. A couple capacitors were leaking so he replaced those as well. He said the mods were just to be able to have a better range for biasing and doesn't really impact sound. I guess it was a common mod to be able to bias the amp to where you want it with more of a range? Here are pictures. It went together pretty fast. I replaced the mounting nuts and washers. They were a hodgepodge of random ones. Now they are all uniform and my OCD can be happy. (By the way I did figure out that I had the speaker jack plugged into the wrong place, so no worries there... It is all good now.) The JJ's fit the sockets way better.

Re: Orange OR80 Combo Repaired!
Looks like you're good to go. Honestly, my 70s OR120 never ever failed on me once with regular preventative maintenance. That sucker got played for 10-15 hours a week in anger on almost full-tilt and it never skipped a beat. After I did a cap job I just renewed the power tubes every summer regardless and that was all it needed. They're built like tanks.
My tone misses that thing but my eardrums, back, neighbours and soundtechs thank me for getting rid of it.

Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?
