The correct answer here is Peavey. I haven’t made a NAD thread for my Special 130 yet but it cost me $100 and it’s more than loud enough for... well really any situation. Plus the Saturation circuit provides the only distortion you will ever need. And I say that as a *very* discerning pedal-head.

Music Man amps can be had for a reasonable price and they are loud.

Been hearing a lot about the cheap Harley Benton Tube Amps.. $250.00 new...

Also, agree about Peavey Tube Amps if you can find a cheap one in good condition..

My friend’s Classic 30 took some work to dial in but when he got it right... damn. Perfection.

That said, my Special 130 is actually a solid state model. The “saturation circuit” is Peavey’s attempt at emulating tube breakup and it does a surprisingly good job. Seems to be thought of pretty negatively online but I can’t see why - I play with it dimed and it sounds thick and raw, perfect for shoegaze.

Lou Reed and Robert Quine played 110W Peavey Bandits all through the 80s and 90s. They sound awesome.

Peavey made his name by making pretty decent amps that were very affordable, at a time when more and more young musicians started playing. Nobody I knew had a Fender or a Marshall when we were young, hell, even a lot of the regional touring bands had all Peavey equipment back then (early 80’s).

Most of my friends that played guitar had one (usually a Bandit), and I had a Peavey TKO bass amp for years, until I blew it up. The TKO isn’t exactly their most powerful bass amp, but I pushed the crap out of it and it worked well for a long time, until it didn’t at all.

I’d like to check out a classic 30 sometime, I’ve heard a lot of good things about them.

Someone earlier mentioned the Orange CR60C. That's a great amp, but pretty expensive for a solid state. I eventually sold mine because I had to drag the matching 1x12 extension cab round and play it as a mini-stack to get the headroom I wanted. Both combo and cab are built like tanks and weigh almost as much.

I still have an Orange 35RT, which is a great little 1x10, solid state combo but, despite having good bass it does sound boxy. I'm going to sell that one soon too as it doesn't have much headroom.

A few suggestions:

I definitely agree with the Peavey Bandit nomination. They won't impress people in the same way that a Marshall, Fender or Vox will, but neither will anyone laugh at them. Anyone who's gigged for long will know that Bandits have been the solid state workhorse of the circuit forever. I've had three in the last 30 years and they've all done the job. Even the current version is great if you don't mind it being quite bulky and heavy. Good sounds and loud a f.

For a small tube combo I recommend the Artist Tweed Tone 20R. It's a two-channel, 20w, 1x12 and is my current main amp. It's kind of what the Fender Blues Junior would like to be when it grows up. It's a little bigger and louder than a B Jr, doesn't sound boxy, and is half the price. Even better for me these days, it's not too heavy. I love it at least as much as I loved either of my old Vox AC15s. Sounds great.

If you don't mind getting your reverb and dirt tones from pedals or a mutiFX, the Vox MV50 Clean is a great little head. Combine it with a 1x12" cab at 4 or 8ohms and it has loads of volume and headroom. There is no on-board reverb and no loop, so you really do need pedals. Luckily, as it is so clean, it takes modulation and time-based FX just fine into the front. It's light, tiny and cheap. What it won't do is look badass. In fact, it looks like a posh alarm clock.

Peavey Bandit!

I sold my Fender Frontman 212 and kept my Bandit 65, which is my main practice amp and sounds great. I'm gentle with the volume knob and also use the low input because the little beast gets very loud.

Any of those older Peaveys will get the job done for you.

+1 on the peavey's.
My main amp rn is a Heritage VTX, good cleans, spring reverb and good distortion channel. Its similar to a musicman hd amp, 130 watts loud as hell. I'm playing in a noise rock duo where the drummer used to play death metal and a noisy indie punk/slowcore style band with bass and drums and it holds its own with everything.
Cost me £250 in a deal with a squier strat so deffo affordable.
Happy hunting (:

Why are you looking for my ex mother in law?
This cracks me up. Maybe because I can totally relate.

The tone was fucking awful, though, do not recommend.

If you can find a 80s Yamaha G100 (came in 112, 212, 410 or 412). Solid state combo; takes effects well (though the built-in distortion, reverb and tremolo aren't great). Very loud and built like a tank.

Another vote for the Peavey Bandit. I don't need a loud amp but that's what I'd get without a second thought. And then I'd duplicate the cabinet in 1/2" real fir plywood and cut the weight in half. It wouldn't survive a drop out of an airplane maybe but a 3/4" MDF cabinet like the Peaveys wouldn't either.
