Two different 6v6 tubes at the same time DRRI?

Post by NateD81 » Fri Mar 29, 2019 3:45 pm

Ok - so I broke the little guide two one of my 6V6 tubes (long story :fp: ) I know it’s not advisable sonically- but will I damage my amp or tubes if I run a JJ and a Gold Lion at the same time? Even if I bias the amp cooler? At least until I get a new tube?

Thanks and sorry in advance for a stupid question!

Back in the day, Fender never checked the valves or "matched" them. They just grabbed from the carton of valves and stuck 'em in.
This valve matching, rolling, is a modern phenomenon.
Yes you want the two valves to be similar in output (Gm) but unless one is waaaaaayyyyy off or has such reduced output that it is DOA, it'll be ok till you get replacement(s).
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

The only thing you'd stand a chance of damaging is the tubes themselves.

The ill effect you might notice sonically is a bit of extra hum (slight) or a more complex and better (IMO) overdrive if you crank it all the way up.

The tubes are healthiest and happiest when matched. The amp will live either way. :)

Thanks guys - your responses are very helpful! I ended up supergluing the guide pin back into place and rebiased the amp for the two new 6V6 tubes. Definitely been an education...apparently gently rocking the tubes out of the socket is not a great idea. Lesson learned!
