tweed champ with a 12" speaker?
has anyone ever tried a tweed style champ circuit with a 12" speaker? i've had this weird urge after repairing my bassman to build a tweed champ circuit but i tend not to be that into smaller speakers and was thinking a 1x12 combo champ. anyone tried something like this?

Slightly off but i use to regularly rock my SF vibrochamp through a 12", or even a 2x12 combo, and that was glorious! Like one of hte best sounds i have ever heard from a guitar in person.
Also rocked a Benson Monarch through a 12" and that sounded killer; it has many of the same qualities one looks for in a tweed style amp.

I have just sourced and refinished a 10 inch cab so I can use my 54 champ with a bigger speaker. I'll get my arse in gear to try it out this weekend and will report back.

A 1x12 5f1 is one of Victoria amps best selling models (Victoria 5112).
I like a 5f1 through a 12 but it's kind of ridiculously huge for essentially a tiny amp.
While many tens sound small, plenty of tens sound big too, so there's no real need to have such a big box to get a bigger sound.
I like the 10" Celestion Gold a lot and don't hear any small speaker sound from it.
I still have the lingering idea that tens sound small though, largely because small cheap amps sound small, and vintage tens tend to sound small.

i will admit i still have that stigma that 10" speakers can sound small. but part of me also likes having a bigger box. so on the rare ocasion i'll do a small gig with it, it'll be closer to my ears. the joys of being 6ft2Telemnemonics wrote: βWed Feb 27, 2019 12:21 pmA 1x12 5f1 is one of Victoria amps best selling models (Victoria 5112).

Haha yeah 6'1" and half deaf, I need a table under an amp plus a second one pointed at my other ear to hear it on stage!s_mcsleazy wrote: βWed Feb 27, 2019 12:47 pmi will admit i still have that stigma that 10" speakers can sound small. but part of me also likes having a bigger box. so on the rare ocasion i'll do a small gig with it, it'll be closer to my ears. the joys of being 6ft2Telemnemonics wrote: βWed Feb 27, 2019 12:21 pmA 1x12 5f1 is one of Victoria amps best selling models (Victoria 5112).

Highly recommend it. My old silverface through my Twinβs 2x12 was glorious!Trout wrote: βWed Feb 27, 2019 12:26 pmI heard this was a great mod too. Think Iβll try it on my SFVCthisisnickpaige wrote: βWed Feb 27, 2019 6:01 amSlightly off but i use to regularly rock my SF vibrochamp through a 12"

Re: tweed champ with a 12" speaker?
I built one last year for a buddy of mine. The circuit was 5F1 with a couple of small mods. Cabinet was a tweed Deluxe size, not built by me. Tried a couple of different speakers, best tonal fit was a broken in Weber 12F150 - sounded 'edgier' and a bit more Fendery.
There was plenty of bass with a 12" speaker, I actually cut some bass with a lower value coupling cap in the pre-amp to tame it.
Sounded great, better than I expected. Loud too. I'd recommend building one if you're keen mcsleazy!

Valvetrain does a 5F2A (tweed Princeton) with a 12β they call the Tall Boy.
I actually like a 12β more for its high end characteristics than for low end. Up until it hits the amp I like brighter sounds (lipstick pickups, JFET boosts, bright reverbs), so an amp that keeps the fizziness under control is helpful.
