Roland JC-120 Stereo Delay?

Post by King Volcano » Mon Sep 10, 2018 9:30 pm

Hey there. I have a vintage JC-120 and I was wondering if there was any way to get it to do stereo delay. I use a lot of stereo delay in my recordings, but it's all done on my recording software's (Ableton's) audio effects. Basically in my recordings the original signal gets played mono and there is one repeat that goes to L and the next goes to R. It sounds amazing with reverb, and I want to recreate this live. I figure if each speaker can get mic-ed (miced? how do you spell that?) for the stereo chorus, then maybe it could work for delay too. I just don't know the first thing about doing it. I know that you can just use two amps, but that's out of the question (can't afford another amp). Could I make it work somehow with the JC-120?

Could you use a delay pedal (Boss DD-7 does that sort of "ping pong" effect) in the effects loop of the JC120?

I don’t know. I’m not sure I totally understand my inputs on my amp. There is no input labeled “effects loop” or anything, and have only used the inputs on the front. I should probably take a look on the back and see what options I have. I’ll experiment and post a picture of the what I got to work with tomorrow.

I don't think all JC-120s have an effects loop but does yours look like this (this is a modern one) round the back:

If you have the version with effects loop, youll only hear the ping pong effects if each speaker is miced up seperately and hard panned L/R. With just the amp in the room, the speakers are too close together so all the side to side panning stuff completely disappears even though the stereo chorus works.

And then you also have a choice to make , the series parallel option also includes the how the chorus effect is routed with your effects. I don’t think it’s possible to do chorus-> delay in this scenario.

This is what I have to work with. What version has the effects loop? Maybe I can use those inputs on the right.

Damn! Why does the new model (jc 40 I think) below the 120 have the effects loop!

When I played my last show with this amp I micd (micced? Someone please tell me how to spell that) both speakers to get the full sound of the stereo chorus. If I got another JC 120 I’ll have to use 4 mics!!!

Oh wait I think I misunderstood. Does the new JC120s have an effect loop? I though it was only the JC40. I don’t exactly want to trade my vintage JC120 for a new one to get an effects loop for stereo... but I guess that might be an option.

Yeah, the modern JC-120s have an effects loop.
