New Free Champ Day

Post by andy » Thu Apr 05, 2018 11:03 am

So a friend of mine asked me set up some guitars for him the other day and gave me this Champ as payment. It doesn’t work currently but it seems to be in pretty good shape (minus the dust). It looks to be in the 65-67 era. Anyway, here’s a little pic of it

I’m hoping to get it fixed this summer and start rockin and rollin!

Nice, congrats! I used to have a ‘68 SF Driprail Champ that was a great little amp.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

That's awesome! There's like 12 parts to that amp, so it'll be an easy fix. Could be a good learning experience, too, if you're not familiar with amps. Congrats! :)

That's a cool little amp, with not too many parts, so it should be a semi-easy fix.

when you open it up, post some photos of the circuit, as mentioned these amps are really simple and sometimes faults are easy to detect visually... I wish I had friends who would pay me in vintage amps :D
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

You and me both, sookwinder! Great score, and, as mentioned, getting it working again will be a great project. Be great to follow your progress.

I was thinking this would be a good first amp project. I looked at the guts (but forgot to take a pic :fp: ) and they looked all original to me. I’m no expert though. I have a friend in town that works on amps regularly so I’m hoping I can bring it to his place and pick his brain. It has the original speaker and I hope it’s in good condition.

oooh that's gonna be real nice!

i got paid in Champs, once. Silverface Vibro-Champs, actually. i flew to NY/NJ to play a performance art/modern dance festival, and couldn't fly with my amp(s). they asked what i needed and i said "basically, two Fender amps" - i had a stereo pedalboard geared for ambient music, so going stereo was definitely worthwhile. somehow they scared up the two VC's, and i even ran them each with a slight tremolo. it felt pretty damn cool and was just loud enough, if a bit buzzy. after the last gig, they said that they had absolutely no use for them, so i accepted them as payment plus my airfare. i knew they were strapped for cash. i just really hope they don't belong to someone else. apparently, they had been donated.

still... i'm jealous of your Blackface Champ!

Sweet score! Those BF champs are pretty awesome amps. I use my ‘67 Vibro Champ a lot. Great for some natural OD, I can run mine at volume 9 or 10 with pissing off the wife and/neighbors. I recommend throwing in a Jupiter 8SC speaker.
