Help finding a Fender custom tolex color

Post by smjenkins » Sun Mar 18, 2018 6:42 pm

Went by the local music store today to see / play the latest wares and I saw a '68 Custom Vibrolux with this color tolex. It looks subtle in the photos below, but in person its so cool.

I noticed that they also use it on all the George Benson custom amps they're currently making. I'd love to get a custom cabinet made for a Ceriatone chassis that Nik is building for me in this color, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Any ideas?

Is it black brushed with silver?

In those photos, it looks a lot like the covering of vintage Mustang cases.

Yeah, it looks exactly like that to me. Thank you! The contrast of the gray next to the black is exactly what it looked like when I saw the amp next to a normal black Fender one. Any idea where that covering could be found?

Maybe? I tried to search for tolex with that name and couldn't find anything. Any potential leads/ links?

To be honest, I had never seen a new-production amp or case with that covering until you posted it! Sorry. But I lthink it's gorgeous, and a nice change from the boring solid colours.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm getting less and less hopeful. I found this TDPRI thread on a similar topic. http://www.tdpri.com/threads/need-some- ... ex.259669/

The money quote: "I called Fender today about the HRD George Benson amp tolex and they don't sell it. The way the guy talked, I'm not even sure if a Fender employee covers these amps."

I'm imagining a magical basement somewhere that Fender keeps all the stuff they use in bulk but don't sell. Waterslides, amp faceplates and this tolex.

These less common tolex styles do tend to find their way to the consumer market eventually, but it takes some time, often it is not until the company that uses it discontinues use and all the surplus heads to market and will be around for a year or two until it is all sold up, unless of course it becomes popular enough with the boutique and home builders to justify keeping it in production.

You would probably do well to give someone like Antique Electronic Supply and email, they have access to the source and they maybe able to get it, probably would not hurt to tell as many people as you can find to do the same! They likely will not order a roll just to satisfy a single builder.
