New Amp Day Marshall Lead 100 Mosfet

Post by HNB » Fri Dec 22, 2017 8:14 pm

My Christmas present from my wife arrived early. I like my Marshall Reverb a lot. (Even though it is solid state.) The distortion and clean sounds are awesome. I wanted to try to find something like it that had two channels so I could go from a sort of clean sound to the distorted sound without having to turn the gain knob up and down. I found this on Reverb and read up on it. I guess it is basically a JCM 800 as a solid state. It has Mosfet tech that has good buzz for its sound. I guess they are in Sunn amps also? At any rate, the online demos I found sounded really nice and they aren't super expensive. This one looked clean so we grabbed it. It is super cold from shipping so I am going to wait on firing it up just yet. Gonna give it a try in the morning. I still need a foot switch. I wonder if one of my Fender two button switches would work on it. Here are pics.

Looks really cool! Fender footswitch should work, I think. Post some sound clips if you can.

I don't have a two button footswitch sadly. I just have one button switches so I will need to grab one later. Here is a demo though as promised.

There are a few up on Reverb. I went with this one because it was clean looking. There were a couple other ones that looked nice also.

That's awesome. I never even knew they existed, and now I do. Being quite content in the solid state camp myself, it's good to see examples of quality SS amps out there. Hope to read about how it sounds. Happy NAD!

Thanks! I have several tube amps and solid state ones. I never really understand the disdain some have for solid state feeling like it can't sound good. What are in those fancy boutique pedals people are running in their tube amps? Tube based pedals? :D

Yeah, the irony there is pretty thick. That was a nice video you posted, by the way. That really seems like a fantastic option for marshall fans who're looking to sidestep the drawbacks that tubes can bring without giving up much in terms of sound. And there are never enough gear demos with different settings and chords instead of one or two settings and nothing but attempted blooze shredding.

And, you know... Marshall cleans are really underrated. It's always nice to see some love there on a board that so heavily favors fender cleans.

I haven't played through a Marshall tube amp, but I have a couple Orange and Fender tube amps. I really like my Master Reverb and Lead 100 clean. They both also have excellent reverb tanks in them as well.

Variety is cool. I can say that the Marshall gain sound is one I really like. I like that I can hear the separate notes and that I can play full chords and it doesn't sound like one noise. It still sounds like a chord. A lot of gain pedals and stuff I have used (Fuzz and Metal pedals) don't sound as full and also are super noisey if you aren't playing. This one has a small hiss you can hear, but it isn't noisey by any means.

I also love that this has a master volume so I can set the gain high, but crank it down to living room volume and not piss off the neighbors. It is WAY bigger physically than I thought it would be. Also pretty heavy, but feels super solid.

I feel like this is its own thing. It is cool and interesting. It doesn't feel or sound to me like a budget Marshall or a poor persons _________. It just sounds good.

Congrats! Ive got one aswell but needs a new pot for the MV. Im guessing its been unused for too long and the spot where the MV sat has corroded.
Brilliant amps, and dirt cheap! Is your reverb a bit noisy? does it pop when you power off?

My reverb isn't noisey. I think most solid state amps make that pop noise when turned off. A couple of my Fender solid states do also.

This brings me back: that was my main amp in high school. THat head with the Marshall 4-10 cab that went with it. Loud and cleans up nice. I had the double foot switch...one button for the reverb and the other button to switch back and forth between clean to dirty. Going from clean to dirty, there always was a big pop as the channel switched.

1. Trick one: I ran a rat pedal into the clean and kept it on all the time, switched to dirty channel for leads.

2. The EQ was subtle....I had the bass full up and mids at half, treble almost off....you can get a great clean sound if you work the EQ.

3. Sounded better into a 4-12 cab.
