Geloso G1.1110-A

Post by Andresound » Wed Nov 29, 2017 9:46 pm

Hi Guys,
I reside in Durban South Africa, and this is my first post here. Looks to be a great resource for info and help. I am also new to this addictive hobby and enjoy building and refurbishing/modding amps. I have found a Geloso Amp from one of my local forums and picked it up for a good price. Man this thing is well built!!! I have just briefly peeked under the hood it seems to be all original and looks well kept. I will visit the amp in about a week and post gut shots if people are interested.

I see a member (racer) from this site, seem to be an expert on restoring old Geloso amps.

Congrats on getting a true monster!!

The 1110 is one rather serious powerhouse. Not THE most poweful amp Geloso built tho

One feature of the 1110 is its powertubes. Having no idea what you spent on the actual amp,if the four of them powertubes are still alive and kicking you´ve got a small fortune right there.
The EL-503 isn´t produced anymore and are getting scarse. Seing that tested such tubes that measure within reason run an easy 100 USD a pop. Ie;measured for that there´s still life left in them.

So. Should one keep the 503´s if they´re ok? Yes and no. The 503´s i´ve worked with a fair bit and they´re no doubt wonderful powertubes. Only drawback really is when the time comes to replace them.

Uhu. Are there any equivalents around then? Yes. Yes,there is and this not as you´d expect i´d say. Many such amps have had their 503´s replaced with regular EL-34s right off the bat and although that is doable you will miss out in capacity as far as power and what the amp can deliver.
A better solution in that case is to repin the thing for a tube called EL-36. Not only is the EL-36 a wonderful powertube per se it is also around in abundance and hence dirt cheap.
The EL-36 was originally designed as a "line" tube and as such has its plate/anode conn atop the tube in the form of a nipple.

That said the 1110 is a later offering by Geloso and TBH i at least find that to have it work for guitar use you basically have to reset the entire thing. The 1110 does NOT work as the earlier Gelosos, where you can basically just jumper a couple of 1/4" jacks in there and call it a day,if a dirty bluesrock amp is what you´re after.

No. The 1110 needs major surgery to perform. Of course you could just opt to jumper a couple of jacks in there and try it out,in fact i urge you to do so to get a feel for the amp,but to make it shine it needs to be reset.

I´ve done a couple of 1110´s and seing their powernumbers (which usually climbs still with EL-36´s in place of the 503´s) i usually end up making these "combination" amps.
Ie; one channel for guitar work and one channel for bass work. Sorts of like an old Marshall JMP with 4 pcs of EL-34 onboard if you wish.

Again tho. Congrats on one serious powerhouse! Of utmost quality even.

Thank you racing for chiming in. Good advice there, which i will check back with you. I will post pics shortly. ~I would like to use this as a dual purpose as suggested. I channel for bass and one for guitar.

Sorry been hectic at work!!! The contractors in my industry, all close shop on the 15 DEC, so everyone is trying to finish their building projects before then. I have a system integration company for the domestic market and this is “silly season”.

Can’t wait to get back  to my small bench and do what I love. Promise to have some gut shots by the end of the week.

I received the amp with the “cage” cover, which is not shown.
1. One of the mains switches or standby, is broken
2. The typical transformer covers are missing, although the transformers look original
3. The 3 gold caps, that supply the DC filtering for the heaters (?), measure poorly.
4. There seems to have been a input of some kind connected to the PI previously (???).
5. Tubes look good and appear to have seen little use.

All and any input is welcome!!! Please be warned.... I am a novice

Right.
First up,the transformers are stock. They´re supposed to look like that. It´s the older Gelosos that sport as a "hood" for them.

In fact, looking at the two pictures that there is all in all an untouched completely stock G.1110. It is bone stock, down to the e-lytes and what not. Period.

For the better i say as that brings that you know exactly what´s in there and what to expect. Now,if memory serves me there were two versions of it. They differ in how bias is reached for the powertubes.
Check which one yours is.

Google "Geloso schematics". You´ll find a URL that stores LOADS of Geloso schematics and i believe both versions of the 1110 is to be found there.

Seems ESR isn´t off for any of them?

No matter. They´re of an age where they should all be replaced anyways.

Hi Racing! And thank you for taking the time to chime in. MOST appreciated!!!

ESR seems fine... but the rating in farads is way off. Is this not a problem? I will replace anyway. I will strip and rebuild (with your help if you would be so gracious ☺️), and turn this into a guitar/bass amp. Will need to instal a PPIMV (for guitar). I am very keen to utilize a Cathode Follower loaded PI, as implemented by yourself and Dumble. I loved your demo of the Dukane.
