Why not use both? My feeling the amp alone is probably fine as long as you don't get too heavy with the low end AND the volume.

You do have a two channel amp to work with, so that could help compensate for volume/tone differences between VI and standard. Add an a/b box at the end of your effects chain and you could use the same pedals for both (run one side to Normal and the other to Vibrato). Or add a pedal (or preset if you already have something that would work) for specific volume/eq/compression tweaks just for the VI.

Funny, I've been eyeing both pieces of gear lately and thinking along the same lines. I like the 15 inch extension cab idea, and channel switching/programmed eq switching ideas. I'm guessing keeping the strangle switch engaged would be a good move to avoid too much low end, if you are going for more baritone-ish tones. I've been thinking of making some kind of bracket or plate to keep the strangle switch in always on position. Maybe someone has made this already for other offset type switches?

What volume level? Are you mic'ing the amp and running through a PA?

No way a 22W tube amp handles bass frequencies at full modern band volumes with a drummer, if you want to actually use it as a bass.

I'm a guitarist and a bassist and also own/play a VI...you'll be fine at home but if you want to rely on that amp when playing live you're gonna be MIA in the mix. That's basically like trying to gig with an SB-12 Portaflex. Fine for studio, underpowered for live use.

Why not get a Sansamp and run to the PA? You can run to your deluxe too if you like, but I'd be a bit concerns about blowing the speaker if you're running bass frequencies through it cranked.

...Unless it sounds killer with guitar too.
15s are definitly an acquired taste... I'm firmly in the "yes, they do sound amazing!" camp.
I've often wondered what a 15 would sound like in my Super... :shifty:

I am using a bassbreaker 45 head into a cab with a 15 and a 12 (evm15b and hempdog respectively) and I play in a punk band and keep up with our drummer without problems with my PSVI. I actually get asked to turn down. So aside from speakers I don't see an issue.

Cool that this old thread has been revived. Since making it, I've been through 3 amps with the VI.

1. Super Reverb - worked, but not ideal. Sounded too compressed and accentuated the treble too much.

2. Supro Thunderbolt - this one has a 15 inch speaker - sounded great, but the generalized low head room of the amp wasn't ideal for me. Could do stoner rock stuff, but I'm just not into that.

3 JC-120 - This has been the ideal amp for the VI. The two 12s and the headroom make for a good platform to hear more of what the VI frequencies are capable of. Over all, this is my pic.

My friend have a silverface Bassman 10. It's not the loudest amp (50 watts), but it's clean, clear and sound awesome with his Pawnshop Bass VI.

I always wanted to tried a bass vi into a Twin Custom (15" speaker) thought.
