Scott ... this is great news.... the last problem was solved by YOU!
Measure some voltages, see something not quite correct and then go searching for what might be causing it.
Trouble shooting at its simplest.
I am truly happy the baby is now oscillating ... you've done well mate.... enjoy it and in the back of your mind start planning the next one !

Y'all are amplifier project enablers! This has been a lot of fun. Right now, I'm still riding the high of knowing that everything works. All I need to do is rewire the switched speed pot back to the way it was and make sure the leads associated with the depth and speed controls are where they need to be for quiet operation and I'm closing the amp up. One of the engineering teachers at my school has even asked me to present it to an electronics class of his!
Thanks again!
P.S.- What do you think? An Ampeg J12 for my next build?

That looks amazing!! Definitely makes me want to try to build an amp of my own

People around here are always helpful, but I've definitely noticed how helpful the "amp guys" are especially I've been wanting a Princeton, and am considering a Brown Face Princeton circuit, maybe next year. I do the woodworking and could do the cabinet from scratch. It'd be a lot of fun I think.sookwinder wrote: ↑Sun Oct 29, 2017 11:59 pmYes you can do it... many people here (including Scott) can give good advice

Thanks for the kind words! Pete Mather at Mather Cabinets should take credit for the look of this thing. He does beautiful work. Also, David's right: You can do it! When I look back on it, the troubleshooting portion of my build included figuring out the following 4 things:
1) I did not have a center tap on my PT and needed to make an artificial one due to the way I'd set things up.
2) I did NOT follow the wiring layout for the tubes closely enough (close enough is a biggie here!).
3) I did NOT follow the wiring layout for one of the under-board wires that took care of some important grounding.
4) I did wire up my 2nd 12AX7 correctly and THOUGHT I had inspected things closely enough, but as it turns out, I needed to look closer. How much closer was something I had to learn on my own.
-It's like when you're learning woodworking or painting: "Smooth" is a term that is relative to each job and your desired goals. The correct level of "smooth" is something you have to figure out by touch over a period of time. The level of thoroughness with which you must inspect your work in a process like this (especially if you're not using directions!) is something that must be learned by doing.
-There are VERY helpful people on this website who lent a hand with their time and wisdom on many occasions. This helped to make this super-positive experience for me despite my ignorance going into process (yes, I read a few books, but I'm still ignorant!) and the problems that I created for myself along the way.
-The 6G2 circuit makes for a NICE sounding amp. Probably a lot easier to horse around in that chassis than that of its tweed cousin, the 5f11.
P.S.- The DreaLuxe (that's what I'm calling it) has now made a joyful noise at three rehearsals and I plan to play a show with it in a couple of weeks. How's that for a tangible receipt for your efforts?

Now...this just an opinion of mine but....
You know what?
Many guitarist that has passed entry level and are looking into what makes for a given sound could IMO benefit from putting an amp together, down to the point where i´d even state it a good idea to ride shotgun for a friend that does if that´s what´s there.
My point being that it is a REAL valuable lesson to ANY "decent" and up guitarist coming to understand what makes the thing sound. Not only knowledge, but a newfound respect for what the amp is - as a tool for the guitarist.
I by NO means have in mind making amp techies out of guitarist, that´s not my point. Not at all, what i´m thinking here is that knowledge is always simple to carry.
Might be that "the" one amp is all that guitarist ever build. It´ll still suffice from my POW.
Doing it to the extremes me and others like me does,is a whole different matter.

All good points and thanks for the advice!
6G2 is the Brownface Princeton? I've never been very familiar with the Fender amp circuit names. Anyone have a chart with what circuit names match to what amp names?
I like the way you think. Your posts are always full of knowledge, which is something I wish more people did (not necessarily around here, just in general). I love how you do things to the extreme, but that probably wouldn't be me for a little while yet. I work industrial maintenance professionally and do electronics a little bit in my free time for fun as well, so some of it might not be too bad to pick up. I'm thinking next year is my year to build an amp.

Yeah,
The 6G2 is the Princeton. A guy over at TGP just finished a 6G2 build where he made the cab himself. It came out nice! If a Latin teacher can do this (with the help of my OSG mentors, mind you) I’m quite certain that you can build a Brown/Blonde Princeton, given your electronics experience! Go for it!
P.S.- if anyone needs help with Latin or Ancient Greek, I’m happy to help advise you on THOSE projects!

Thanks! Part of me is sad it’s over, because I enjoyed the process so much. I’m really enjoying playing through the amp, though. I feel like I’m just beginning to learn about it and look forward to finding out new things about it!

Thanks, Jam007!
Just a quick update on this: After a few weeks of rehearsals, the DreaLuxe had its first gig the other night. One of the guitarists for the band we were supporting played through it rather than using his own amp. Hearing him play through it from out in the audience confirmed that I love the way this amp sounds from anywhere in the room. Their guitarist is a MUCH better musician than I and could probably make any setup sound good, but I was impressed with what I heard! On stage, playing through it myself, I was happy that I chose to build this as it's a perfect complement to our other guitarist's more scooped sound. I can always hear myself in the mix playing through this. At 3 on the Volume dial, you've still got a clean sound with your volume rolled off, but if you hit the strings hard there's some hair on the note. That's exactly what I had in mind when I decided to build this, so I'm glad the gamble paid off!
-Demo to come soon. I've got some time off from work coming up!
