Headphone amp for bass?

Post by Stereordinary » Sun Jun 11, 2017 10:02 am

I'm not sure if what I'm imagining exists, but is there a headphone amp sort of thing for bass? Currently I'm using my four-track tape recorder as a headphone amp, but I don't think it has the headroom I need. So maybe here's some kind of DI box that has a headphone out? Maybe with a decent amp/can simulation? Just trying to practice at home with headphones, but get close to the sound I'd get full volume through a proper bass rig.

Oh also, it needs to be able to handle effects in front of it really well. I'm playing with chorus, drive, octave fuzz, delay, and reverb on the bass.

I'm probably beating a dead horse here but the SansAmp Bass Driver is simply great. I use it on guitar and bass. I just plug my headphones into my parallel out if i need that, but i usually plug into my interface and headphone out from there. Takes pedals and sounds real. You could even then use it as a DI to turn your bass line level. It was the amp killer for me, especially on bass. They have tons of other options too, give them a look.

Try the Hotone Thunder Bass. 5 compact watts with an FX loop and headphone out
This is a signature. If you're reading this you've gone past the end of my post.

My brother uses the Vox Amplug Bass for headphone practice in his apartment and he's been happy with it. Cheap, portable, has a line-in for backing tracks.

I use the Phil Jones Bass Big Head for hours a day. It sounds nice. I used to use the smallest Mackie mixing board.

That Phil Jones Bighead looks like it might be about what I'm looking for, though it's twice the price I was hoping to spend.

Anybody know how well the Old Blood Noise headphone amp performs with bass?

The Bighead appears on the Talkbass classifieds. If it's what you're looking for, and you will use it to practice more, I can't recommend it more highly.

That Old Blood thing might be perfect. If you find out whether it's good for bass please post it here!

Went ahead and ordered the OBNE headphone amp, will report back with my thoughts after I've had some time with it.
