Vintage 65 twin buy not to buy
Used CL find "vintage 65 twin reverb blackface ab763." Everything is new but the board the faceplate and the wood. I think the output transformer is new because it has a "mod" where they remove the ext. Speaker jack and replace it with a vol. Knob and what I've found is this "mod" requires a new OT to lower the impedance thus acting like a attenuator. Asking 1000 I offered 600 he said let me think about that. Its about a 2 hour drive to play it. Is it worth it? Or is to much mojo gone?
Thank you for your time.

Re: Vintage 65 twin buy not to buy
what can you do wrong with 600 for a hardly modded vintage twin?
if it sounds awesome, has no problems and the mods feel ok to you, take it ! ? !
its a player !

I'm confused. Is this a '65 Reissue?57onyournek wrote: but the board
I don't think I would drive two hours to see a '65 Reissue Twin from somebody who priced it at $1000---even if I was into the particular mod. But it would also totally depend on the scarcity and location/market. There are places where even if this is a silverface with a bunch of mods and a new cabinet (from mojotone or something), then $600 could be just about right.

No its a vintage ab763 blackface twin... with new speakers (he doesn't know what brand they are) tolex and speaker cloth. so the only things vintage are the cab the faceplate and board "circuit board" tubes are 15AR4/GZ34 tube, two 6L6 tubes, six 12AX7C.

Twins are beasts. They are heavy and can get super loud.
If you play in a space that allows for this, or you just like loud, check it out-- but if you are just excited to get a decent deal on a modified, sort-of vintage amp, I would pass because you will just have this huge amp in your place that you can never really turn up, and when you invariably get tired of it sitting there unused and try to sell it, all you will get is lowball offers because of the non-originality.

^agreed
I've had a vintage silverface twin whose circuit had been blackfaced (probably the opposite of yours, they took out the master volume) and had WGS speakers (ET65 / Veteran 30). It sounded best with the volume at 8 or 9 (earplugs obviously). I usually played it at practice at 6 or 7. And at shows I'd turn it down to 4 or 5, but once in a while someone would want it down to 3. For a show, I'd feel frustrated with it at 2 or 3. But even at home, on 0.75--1.5, tamed with a volume pedal, and nothing like it's full potential; I loved it. And I thought it sounded better even at that volume than lots of other lower wattage amps in stores. BUT I eventually decided that 40w was a better fit, found a deal on a semi-boutique something like a Pro Reverb.
Anyway, I think you're doing the right thing not falling all over yourself to get this one. But if you want it and you want a twin, it could work out for you.

I see. I don't work on amps, so I'm thinking of PCBs vs handwired. But handwired amps have circuit boards too I suppose.57onyournek wrote:No its a vintage ab763 blackface twin... with new speakers (he doesn't know what brand they are) tolex and speaker cloth. so the only things vintage are the cab the faceplate and board "circuit board" tubes are 15AR4/GZ34 tube, two 6L6 tubes, six 12AX7C.

Re: Vintage 65 twin buy not to buy
Agreed with the above two posts. I got a Vibrosonic with some stuff that wasn't original. Now I have two smaller amps that I will play more because they aren't so big and loud. Best offer I've gotten to sell is $350, and I paid $650. Maybe it's because it isn't quite a twin, and nobody knows what it is. Part of it is definitely because it's not all original, it's huge, and way too many watts for most people's needs.
