Marshall Major: need help/opinions

Post by cpeck » Sun Apr 16, 2017 3:42 am

I was gifted a ~1970 Marshall Major in non working condition.

Both of the transformers are blown and it needs new tubes across the board.

My understanding is that these amps are basically only useful as clean amps - any pedals in line cause some sort of spike which ends in major repairs (hence the condition in which I received it). I have about 100 guitar pedals and use them all the time.

Because it will need replacement transformers, I'm not sure what the resale value would be and the transformers for these amps aren't cheap.

So I'm wondering: can these amps be made more sturdy? Or should I fix it and flip it? I know they are exceedingly rare.

I don't know if it was pedals or operator error blaming it on the pedals, but the Marshall Major is Mick Ronson's signature amp, and he did not play clean and hit the front end hard with a Mark 1 Tone Bender, wah and later on a tape echo of the Roland or WEM variety. So I would say the priblem is a maintenance issue and not a pedal or need to play clean issue. Kuddos on the amp if you can fix it. It should be a collectible.

Seing how scarse that amp is,just resell it as is.
Turn to the dedicated Marshall forums and offer it as spares. Use that money to buy something more up your alley.

Send me Pics. Top of the chassis (all tubes, cap cans and transformers) and high quality pics of the turret board and tube sockets, etc.

You could always turn it into a more useful amp.
