Peavey Classic 30

Post by Mike S » Sun Apr 09, 2017 5:48 pm

I've been looking for a "big boy" amp to replace my current situation and saw a used Classic 30 for sale at an amazing price. I'm wondering if it will be a better replacement for my current setup.
I play through a Crate GFX-15, generally the clean channel. I almost always play through a Boss '59 Bassman or Boss '65 Deluxe Reverb pedal. Basically I want something with tubes, two channels and a foot switch that sounds close to a Bassman or a good Vox amp.

Well, the tweed makes it look like a Bassman. And the 4 el34's are also in an AC30 , but that's kinda where the similarities end. They're kinda their own thing so try before you buy.
That being said, it's a well loved 2 channel amp that could suit your needs fine.

My Classic 20 is a bit noisy but a wonderful amp. They sound great in a band mix. You won't get attention for your amp playing a greasy nightclub which is nice

While not a particularly inspiring amp by themselves they're decent pedal platforms and reliably good-sounding unless they're totally shot. The drive channel has a weird kind of low-mid response that I can never seem to dial out, but the clean channel is nice and the reverb is passable. If I turn up to a show and the backline is a C30 I'm pretty happy because I know I'll be able to at least get a decent clean sound and work from there.

If it wasn't for the channel switching I'd recommend the Delta Blues which does a passable bassman impression and sounds a lot more interesting by itself than the C30. Excellent single channel with a nice deep reverb and a big fat 15" speaker.

I ended up selling my Crate and three Boss Fender pedals and going with a Blues Junior III. It's too bad that something like a Twin Reverb, Princeton or a Bassman and Reverb tank weren't really in my price range.

Actually,no. I beg to differ.

Soundwise i´m with the rest of u guys, from a tech POW tho..not so much.

The C30 is truly a piss poor design in summary. Since long i regard taking a C30 apart to reflow the entire thing with my soldering pen a regular service job. Yes. They are THAT bad.
Their "3 part" construction in liason with their PCB setup makes for a setup that doesn´t take kindly to vibrations and if there´s one thing a combo do...you guessed it. I commonly remedy at least 20 solderjoints every time i get one on the bench.

That done it´ll normally hold up fairly well for approx a 1yr of usage, until it´s time to take it apart and do it all over.

In turn their PT´s are to underdimensioned it isn´t even funny. I´ve lost track of C30´s in the door with shot PT´s. The PT of a C30 can go belly up ´cause it´s tuesday.

Agreed though that they sound real decent when in order.
