Loving all the amp-porn and discussion in this thread, so here's a follow up question: for dirty tones, are you using any pedals, or just the amp? Boosts? Fuzzes?

I've heard some great, fuzzy tones coming from bands using Orange amps, but it's always hard to tell how much of the tone is the amp itself vs pedals.

I bought an OR50 today.

They make the CS50 "hand-wired" version. I didn't get that one.

I found I actually like the sound of the regular PCB OR50 more.

I think I've heard one or two other people say much the same, that the pcb one is as good if not better.

I'm not sure what's different beyond the construction. I can't find schematics online for either.

But sometimes things just come together right, and I get the sense that's true with the production model OR50.

I remember you said some years ago that you didnt like Orange amp. I think you said it was more about the look and the marketing then the sound. What made you change your mind?

I have the small Rocker 15 and I really really like it. It have all the things I like in a 15 watts combo, except the reverb. Since it have a good effect loop, I put a reverb pedal in it and it's great. ( I still have my Tiny Terror, but without and effect loop, reverb sound very bad in it)

There are many example in life where we shouldnt like things, but for obscure reason, it works. Sometimes, the sum is better then the parts.

Me too, I dont like V30. Not my type of sound. But for whatever reason, they work in Orange.

The Rocker 15 is suppose to be a 70's classic/hard rock amp. I dont even play in that style. I play in a Indie rock band where Vox or Fender would be more conventionnal; but the Orange works better for me.

All very true!

I'll also say that to me the OR50 is very much a "one-trick pony." But I tend to like specialized gear, more than "general purpose" gear.

Even the cab with the Vintage 30s... the Vintage 30 is not my favorite Celestion. But it's a great match for this amp. I can't really explain, but there are multiple things about the OR50 + PPC412 that I "shouldn't like" and it doesn't matter. As a system it's just fucking great.

wow, you're rockin' a half stack?? are you touring with this rig?

In SP, I put together a few custom Black angled Orange 412s with heritage G12Hs. Those cabs sounded amazing.

I'm touring playing backlined Princeton Reverbs (or Deluxe Reverbs, commonly, when they somehow can't be bothered to find me a Princeton).

But if I were playing heavier music, I would damn sure use one of these. I actually did use one with Kimberly Nichole in Atlanta last week. They're so good.

I just got mine, though. I don't even have a cab yet.

What's your opinion of the G12T-75 vs the V30?

Also, what's your opinion of the change from "Made in UK" versus "Made in China" Celestions? People love to debate the differences (or lack thereof) but I was such a Fender guy for so long I'm kind of ignorant of the finer points of Celestions.

There have been very few times where I liked the 75s, usually older ones broken in from 1983-85. I prefer the V30s. But then again, there are a few variations. The Marshall proprietary versions (they simply say 'Vintage' on them) from the mid 90s are my favorite. The current MIC ones aren't terrible. They're ok.

The MIC G12H and G12M are pretty good, I prefer the H. The Heritage MiUK just has that special thing, especially after they've been broken in.
If I really think about it, going with the G12H.... the Chinese made ones are a little more scooped so they may appear a tad brighter. The UK ones have that nice midrange that just sits in a mix well without being fatiguing. IME anyway.

IMO, the G12H is THEEE all-time best rock'n'roll speaker when it comes to British crunch.

One more thing, I think you'd like the original G12-65 from the early 80s. (1982-83). It's one of my favorites and the favorite of many others.
The G12-80 is another interesting one. They sound great in something like a twin reverb when you don't want such a scooped sound but don't want to totally change course. They have a big 'cleaner' sound compared to others in British amps (i.e. Eric Johnson used to favor them in the 80s).
